Hotstar announces availability of Disney+ content for Indian users

The content from Disney+, a subscription video on-demand streaming service, is officially available on Hotstar, an Indian over-the-top streaming service, after a slight delay.

Various devices that can get access to the new Disney+ content on the Hotstar platform include Android TV, Amazon Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, iOS, and Android. The content will also be made available on the web browser. The existing as well as new subscribers are subject to higher subscription fees than the regular payment amount for Hotstar VIP and Hotstar Premium. Previously, Hotstar subscribers paid ?365 per year, which will currently be increased to ?399 per year. In addition, the flagship membership of Disney+ Hotstar Premium will be ?1,499 per year, a hike from ?999 per year, to get access to the original content such as The Mandalorian, the Avengers, Aladdin, Toy Story 4, Frozen II, and The Lion King, among others, which are under Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, and Marvel.

Uday Shankar, Chairman of Disney APAC and Star & Disney India, has stated that the recent content addition will bring a new era of premium video streaming in India. It is a part of the company’s aim towards committing to the delivery of high-quality content with impactful stories for the viewers. He also expressed elation at the fact that the content would bring inspiration, happiness, and comfort with the power of storytelling by Disney, through the technology of Hotstar.

This streaming service was previously planned to be launched on 29th March. The company also has tested the quality by releasing the content to some users on 10th March and has informed viewers that the rollout was a part of the beta testing.

The arrival of the content from Disney+ Hotstar is likely to spur more competition in the video streaming space, which includes Eros Now, Jio Cinema, Zee5, Sony Liv, Voot, Amazon Prime Video, and Netflix, among others.
