General Motors has announced that it is going to provide hands-free driving facility in all its Cadillac car models by 2020. Currently called Super Cruise, the system is now available only on the CT6 luxury sedan. Reportedly, Super Cruise helps in steering, braking, and accelerating the car while it is on the highway. An eye tracker meanwhile, ensures that the driver is observing the road and can control the wheel steering whenever it is required.

Incidentally, this is not the first self-driving system introduced by an automotive giant on the road. Tesla’s Autopilot has the ability to steer, brake and accelerate all by itself, however, it requires the driver to periodically touch the steering wheel.

GM has stated that incorporating the Super Cruise on the Cadillac is only the beginning and the company will make the system available on other vehicles after 2020. GM’s Super Cruise model makes use of new technologies such as Lidar, high-precision GPS system, and driver attention system, cite the company sources.

Cadillac is also trying to offer vehicle-to-everything communications in a high-volume crossover by 2023. The new system will help cars send wireless signals to other automobiles, thereby preventing vehicle collisions.

The system also necessitates the drivers to maintain an active subscription for an inbuilt vehicle communication system referred as OnStar. The communication system equips the vehicle with the automated ability of informing the emergency services in case of car accidents. The users can drive the cars hands-free for nearly 130,000 miles on the highways in the countries such as Canada and the U.S.

It has been speculated that the automotive giant is working on manufacturing autonomous cars that will offer ride-sharing services. According to Mark Reuss, executive VP, global product development, purchasing & supply chain, GM, the company is currently committed to bring in an altogether new era of personal transportation in the automotive industry. GM seemingly, also aims to consolidate its stance in the self-driving vehicle technology industry in the ensuing years.
