Hero MotoCorp, a motorcycle and scooter manufacturer, has reportedly announced plans to extend the production shutdown across its manufacturing facilities in India. The decision comes amid the rapid surge in COVID-19-infection cases in the region over the last few weeks.
Most recently, the two-wheeler manufacturer has issued a statement about the temporary closure of facilities including the GPC (Global Parts Center) in Neemrana and the CIT (Centre of Innovation and Technology) in Jaipur. The company had decided to halt its production in a phased manner from 22nd April to 1st May, which was later extended till 9th May.
The temporary shutdown measures were imposed at Hero MotoCorp's 6 manufacturing units at Dharuhera & Gurugram in Haryana, Halol in Gujarat, Neemrana in Rajasthan, Haridwar in Uttarakhand, and Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh. The company has reportedly cited that it is consistently monitoring the situation and is prepared with the business continuity plans to ensure rapid resumption and scale-up of operations as and when the COVID-19 situation improves.
The latest announcement to extend the facility shutdown is likely to impact the company’s output. Due to the rapid decline in demand over the past months, several manufacturers have also scaled down their production. Its impacted facilities have a production capacity of 90 lakh units per year in total.
For the record, Hero MotoCorp is the 2nd vehicle manufacturer to announce the facility shutdown extension amid the coronavirus pandemic over the past few days. Prior to the company, Maruti Suzuki, Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest carmaker, has announced a planned maintenance extension across its facilities in Haryana to 16th May. The carmaker may witness a steep decline in demand for its vehicles and consider scaling down its production across the country due to the partial lockdown and curfew being imposed in several states across the country.
