Twitter has reportedly paused its verification program within just over a week of its relaunch. The company has stated that the number of requests received was more than anticipated, and it will first review requests currently at its disposal, before restarting the program for accepting newer ones.
The social media giant officially initiated its verification program on May 20. It invited its users to send in applications and get their accounts verified. However, Twitter has seemingly accepted applications beyond its handling capacity. Albeit, users will still be able to send application requests once the program is relaunched in some time.
Twitter stopped this program back in November 2017, amidst some confusion amongst its users regarding the program. But the micro-blogging site assured that it would relaunch the program with certain enhancements.
The company has stated that it will provide some clarity regarding its verification policies and will only offer the blue badge to accounts that are active, notable, and authentic. For an account to be verified, it must come under one of the six categories: ‘Companies, Brands, and Organizations’, ‘Entertainment’, ‘Activists, Organizers, and other Influential Individuals’, ‘News Organizations and Journalists’, ‘Government’, or ‘Sports and Gaming'.
For the record, Twitter is a social networking and microblogging service that was co-founded by Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone, Noah Glass, and Evan Williams in March 2006. On this platform, users can interact and post with messages known as tweets. Registered users can like, post, and retweet a tweet whereas unregistered users can only these tweets. Users can access Twitter through its mobile app designed for both Android and iOS or through its website.
The San Francisco-based company has over 25 offices across the world. Within a span of 6 years of its founding, Twitter posted over 340 million tweets from 100 million users in a day. In 2013, the company handled over 1.6 billion daily average search queries. Twitter has over 330 million monthly active users as of Q1 2019.
