Uber collaborates with Delhi metro to allow ticket booking on its app
Government transportation agencies have been witnessed to partner with private ride-sharing firms across the world, lately. These relationships have developed as government agencies look to grow ridership, polish their brand as well as remain relevant among the increasingly progressing app-based transportation services.
Uber, the renowned US-based ride-sharing company delivering services like ridesharing and food delivery, reportedly announced that it has formed a new partnership with Delhi metro in India. The collaboration would enable users to book their tickets for the metro from Uber’s official mobile application.
The new project would undertake the 210 Delhi Metro rail stations, with a separately appointed space for Uber taxis and kiosks.
The company stated that New Delhi is the first Asian city and the second city in the APAC region to launch Uber public transport. This facility is currently available across nine other cities, including Sydney and Boston.
The new feature would enable customers to get a ride at the push of a button, allowing them to solve their first and last-mile connectivity challenges.
Reports cite, more than 25 percent of the company’s rides, at corporate hubs like Gurugram, start or finish at a metro station. Once in operation, the new service would also enable users to gain information on public transport, which includes bus and metro routes.
CEO of Uber, Dara Khosrowshahi stated that the company wants to replace cars of its customers with their phones.
Khosrowshahi further added that the company is proud to start its novel journey planning feature called Public Transport at New Delhi, India. The feature would integrate the company’s app with Delhi’s public bus and Metro service.
Mangu Singh, Managing Director of Delhi Metro stated that if this feature comes to fruition, life of people in Delhi would become much easier. The first mile and last-mile connectivity have always been a problem and this service would now offer an integrated solution to the problem.
However, Uber did not divulge much details over when it intends to deploy an end-to-end solution. Moreover, when the company does roll it out, the Uber app would have to presumably track the customer’s location constantly. So, Uber would have to tackle privacy concerns as well.
